After Thanksgiving: Getting Ready for the Year Ahead

After Thanksgiving: Getting Ready for the Year Ahead

Home, mind, and style

The turkey is gone, the leftovers are finished, and the light is getting softer earlier each evening. For me, the days after Thanksgiving are when I start quietly preparing for the new year. I don't mean resolutions. I mean three small preparations.

1. The home
Before anything else, I clear a little space. One shelf, one corner, one wall. Then I give that space something to look at every day. This year it's the 2027 Japandi Art Calendar. Each month pairs a gentle sheep with a Japanese lucky charm, so the wall holds one small piece of good luck at a time. A bigger calendar is said to bring more luck, which is why I chose the large Ledger size. A home doesn't need to be redecorated to feel new. It just needs one intentional thing in it.

2. The mind
I buy a notebook on almost every trip, and I keep them all over the house. Writing settles my breathing the way meditation does. A new notebook at the start of the year feels like a step toward a new future. So I give my mind its own space too, whether that's the Orange Journal or a Today's Sign card. A sign only counts if you notice it, and noticing gets easier with a small daily habit. One line a day is enough.

3. The style
This one doesn't have to be fancy. I start with what I wear at home. Those are the clothes I put on first in the morning and the last ones I take off at night, so they deserve some care. This year I'm replacing the worn-out ones with a soft sweatshirt and a pair of sweatpants I actually like seeing in the mirror. Our "You Deserve Everything" embroidery is a quiet reminder to treat yourself well, even on a day when no one will see you. Our sweatpants have a relaxed unisex fit, so if you prefer a closer line, size down.

Small is enough
None of this takes much. A cleared corner, a notebook, a set of loungewear you feel good in. That's enough to step into January already feeling ready.
